Managed Servers (KVM VPS)

End-of-life: PHP 7.4, 8.0 & 8.1 being removed (Security)

Due to migrating to CloudLinux’s alt-PHP (which includes security patches), you can now run older versions!

Clients wear all risks with regard to using EOL versions, however for all intents and purposes alt-PHP via CageFS should be solid. This change improves flexibility for our clients, as it allows for problematic migrations that can be cleaned up later.

Please note that usual policies apply with regard to hacked/spamming/etc sites and scripts, problems must be addressed per usual. Old code that works fine is OK. :-)

Updated

We’re continuing to slowly work through clients’ machines, engaging with clients to make it graceful.

Our aim is to finalise the work inside February, with March just for stragglers.

Please let us know if any concerns. Thank you!

Updated

PHP 8.4.x and 8.5.x have been deployed to all client servers, and are configured ready for usage now.

We have not moved any accounts to a new version yet, and will be gradually working through each machine.

G’day,

Please note that for security and operational reasons, we’re removing these PHP versions:

  • PHP 7.4 (Security Fixes ended 28th November 2022)
  • PHP 8.0 (Security Fixes ended 26th November 2023)
  • PHP 8.1 (Security Fixes ended 31st December 2025)

In addition, any clients with PHP 5.x or 7.x versions will have them removed after we work with them to resolve issues within codebases that were previously preventing upgrades to newer versions from taking place.

We will be retaining the following versions across our managed client infrastructure:

  • PHP 8.2 (Security Fixes ending 31st December 2026)
  • PHP 8.3 (Security Fixes ending 31st December 2027)
  • PHP 8.4 (Security Fixes ending 31st December 2028)
  • PHP 8.5 (Security Fixes ending 31st December 2029)

Our crew are available to assist you with necessary guidance and works to help with the transitions.

We strongly recommend that you upgrade websites to PHP 8.3.x as this sub-major version is mature, reliable and performant. If there are breaking changes, which is unlikely, you may wish to move those (only) to 8.2.x.

If you have any questions, concerns or otherwise, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Cheers,
Merlot Digital
